NWCC
(Northwest Christian Church) began
almost at the onset of the space age, with meetings
at the schoolhouse beginning in 1957.
Before the transistor, the Vietnam conflict, the invention
of Velcro, the dawn of the jet age, and while women
wore white gloves and men wore coats and hats, a core
band of believers met, grew, and committed to build
what is now the Fellowship Hall. With the nation recovering
from wars and with the demands of "baby boomer"
children, money was tight. For the times, the commitment
made by the founders was substantial.
As the surrounds grew, so did
NWCC, and soon the chapel and the educational wing were
added (1960's).
Shortly thereafter, in 1972,
the sanctuary and offices were added on the east end.
Both required extra financial commitments from the members.
The final mortgage on the evolving building was "burned"
in the 1980's.
The surrounding community had
reached its limits of expansion, and new community growth
on the north side was to be served by new churches.
NWCC remained a healthy and vibrant church through two
decades and during that time inspired, nurtured,
and supported refugee families and 9 student ministers.
Yet More Growth
With the advent of population
growth in the Hilliard area, NWCC was blessed with an
expanding congregation in the
late 1990's. Growth, combined with an aging facility,
led to the decision to once again upgrade and improve
the physical facilities. That construction was undertaken
in 2001 and completed in 2002.
Today's facilities represent an amalgamation of faith,
work, and giving for over 45 years!
A look back over the
last three years shows some
of the remarkable successes of NWCC's body of
believers, including:
- The largest regional church
participation in the annual Crop Walk.
- Nurturing of yet another
student minister.
- Two very successful student
ministry trips.
- 15 Chalice Arts Series programs.
- The largest yard sale in
the community.
- Substantial monetary donations
toward Camp Christian's new kitchen/dining hall and
additional camper residence.
- Baptism of 8 souls into new
life, plus 43 new members by transfer.
