A
Sculpture of Meaning, Inspiration, and Reverence
The
Symbolism
This
stylized Latin cross symbolizing the crucification of
Christ for the redemption of humankind, is adorned with
additional symbols meaningful to all of the Christian
faith, but especially to congregants of the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ). The chalice emblasoned
with the St. Andrew Cross (of Scotland) is, of course,
the official logo of the denomination. The vine of grapes
refers not only to Jesus' words, "I am the vine,
you are the branches," (John 15:5), but also to
the fact that Disciples of Christ gather about the Lord's
table weekly in their worship. The flames enveloping
the cross from the base call to mind immediately the
tongues of fire at Pentecost and the action of the Holy
Spirit in our lives.
